A new plaque celebrating the evacuation of children from the Basque region of Spain during the Spanish Civil War eighty years ago was unveiled at Wherstead Park on 10 June 2017. 100 of the children were housed at the Georgian mansion in 1937. Support for their upkeep came from voluntary contributions, including from staff of the Co-operative Society, now based at the mansion.
