George Clowes


In March 2024, a plaque was unveiled to Commemorate Dr George Henry Alexander Clowes who was born at 54 High Street.


After studying in England and on the Continent, he emigrated to the United States where he carried out research into Cancer.


He joined the Pharmaceutical Company Eli Lilly, initially as a Staff biochemist, but within a year he was promoted to Head of Research and development where, in 1923 he oversaw the successful purification, standardisation and mass production of the lifesaving drug, Insulin.
