About the event

Les Jacob’s excellent new book ‘The Story of Ipswich Barracks 1795-1928’ (available from Amazon) has a photo from our Ipswich Society Flickr collection on its front cover. In return, Les has offered a guided walk around the site for our members. This is scheduled for August 19th, starting at 6.30pm, meeting in front of the Greyhound pub in Henley Road. The circular walk will address the Militia Depot and view the barracks' boundary markers on Anglesea Road. Walking down Geneva Road to the main gate, we will consider the barracks, its regiments and soldiers.  In St Matthew's Street, the parish church, parades, funerals and exercises will be discussed.  In Berner's Street, we will view more of the barracks' wall, a boundary marker, and the property that was once the Soldiers' Institute. The walk is free of charge, but booking is essential as we can only take 20 people maximum.
